It’s the genderdeder, stupid

June 17, 2011

It’s an exciting day when bloggers you’ve never met respond online to something you’ve posted (in this case, my write-up of the sexist bent of MSNBC.com’s sports blogs), especially when they start out like this:

While on my latest venture into the world of the internet I stumbled across a blog post by what I guess we would call a feminist but I’m not aware of her views so I’m not going label her one because I personally don’t believe we need feminists in the 21st century.

Okay, so that’s how it’s going to be. [Girds loins with flannel.] A quick skim of KuntaJay’s blog reveals that he and I would probably agree on a lot of things, though I regret to say that in this case, he misses the point as badly and as earnestly as Ryan Theriot misses grounders to short:

This lady’s problem seems to be that Women’s professional sports don’t get discussed enough on their website. I don’t know what to tell you except- lack of interest. It might be a hard truth to swallow but fact is, no one really cares about Women’s sports….That has nothing to do with sexism it has all to do about money.

And, as we all know, there’s zero connection between sexism and money! A number of his commenters also jump on board the “they’re just giving the public what it wants” train:

I completely agree with you, it’s because of the money not the genderdeder

Equality of opportunity is fine and good. Equality of outcome is counterproductive and bad. [???]

I know personally that women sports are just so damn boring…

Some people just feel the need to complain and as long as she has an audience she will keep doing it, is a shame.

Wait. Did you catch that last one? When I’m presumed to be writing something because there’s an audience for it, that’s a crying shame. When the MSNBC sports bloggers do it, well, that’s just how the world works, and we obsolete feminists need to quit grousing about it.

Meanwhile, back at the “Off the Bench” blog, I regret to report that Rick Chandler didn’t like any of the suggested story tips I offered him after he specifically requested that I do so. He did, to his credit, publish a post about the ridiculous ousting of a lesbian couple from Target Field (though Craig Calcaterra at “HardBall Talk” did it better), and a piece about a woman who stood up to the Vancouver rioters.

But his headlines from the week also included the following:

  • Naked woman swims with Beluga whales in Arctic Ocean
  • Miss USA in trouble once again, this time for after-hours party binge [yep, I’m just as baffled as you about why this is a sports story]
  • No way….Tony Romo’s wife segregated bridesmaids by hair color?
  • Knockout stage: Germany’s women’s soccer team poses for Playboy
  • Let’s watch the fun as two blondes attempt to take their own picture

Thanks for keeping your finger on the pulse of women’s athletics, Rick! And, folks, I submit to you that we do need to keep a few feminists around for the 21st century, if only because skinny-dipping with whales in the Arctic is warmer when you’ve got some hair on your legs.
