Greta’s get-well wish for Albert Pujols

June 22, 2011

The good-looking kid in this photo with Wilbur (who’s still waiting for his new Cardinal bullpen, thank you very much) is my niece, Greta. She’ll be four in August, and though she’s being raised in Boston as the product of a mixed Cardinal-Red Sox marriage, she’s a lifelong fan of Albert Pujols. As soon as her coordination allowed it, we taught her how to do his trademark two-finger point to the heavens after running the bases, and from an early age she recognized his number 5 and listed him alongside Barack Obama as her favorite stars to root for.

Like all of us in Cardinal Nation, she’s concerned about his injury, and she wanted to contribute a get-well video to his recovery effort:

Um, I need to tell you something about Pujols. Do you know what happened to him? The ball hit him right here [indicates wrong wrist] aaaand I’m eating breakfast and I’m going to send the goodwill card….the get-well card, um, to Nana and Papa [her St. Louis grandparents] aaaand….I hope you get better, Pujols. Bye!

Right there with you, kiddo.

Thanks to my sister, Jessica, for the video and for ensuring that the kid doesn’t grow up to be just a Red Sox fan!

Okay, I am a Twins fan living with another Twins fan in A’s territory, so, not the biggest Cards fan in the world. But this video is very dear. Go, Greta! And get well soon, Pujols.

If there’s anyone who can empathize with the pain of losing a key player to a devastating injury these days, it’s a Twins fan! Thanks.

My favorite part is the random explanation that she’s eating breakfast, in case the bagel didn’t give it away.

It’s fucken hilarious when little kids talk that way: no-filter stream-of-consciousness.
