Happy birthday, Dolores!

UPDATE: Don’t miss the newer post with the latest video of Dolores!

Yesterday marked Dolores’s 95th birthday (if you haven’t met Dolores yet, click here), and the baseball world took appropriate notice. Not only did the Cardinals honor their biggest fan by sweeping a road series from the Orioles and gently ushering Ryan Franklin toward his much-needed retirement, but Mike Shannon issued a special shout-out to Dolores during the fifth inning of yesterday’s broadcast.

Here on the West Coast, Julie and I treated our newest idol to a day out at Petco Park. You’ll want to check back in a day or two for video from the happy day—trust me, you’ll kick yourself, Johnny Cueto-style, if you miss the story about Dolores and Enos Slaughter—but enjoy some photos in the meantime, and click on any of them to see a larger version:

Dolores and her Cardinal "shrine." The pastel is her granddaughter's work; the ball bears the autograph of Marty Marion, her all-time favorite player.

Despite all the red, we were rooting for the Padres to sweep the Royals---not only do we respect the hometown team, but we're still a little sore from 1985.

Scroll down or click “read more” to see who came to visit during the game….

Through the grace of an extraordinary usher (thanks, Jerry!), Dolores got a personal visit from the Friar, of whom she's a fan.

Kissed by a monk.

A beautiful day for a ballgame....

....and a Padre win! (Note future Cardinal closer Heath Bell in the center of the photo.)

Photo credit for this one goes to our excellent seatmate, Howard.

Julie's birthday gift for Dolores, made entirely of veterinary bandages, because that's just how talented Rick Ankiel's girlfriend is.
