Dolores: Not slain by Slaughter

July 3, 2011

Guess what, Cardinal fans: Enos Slaughter’s famous “mad dash” in the 1946 World Series wasn’t his only desperate attempt to score! (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.) As Dolores told us on the way home from her birthday ballgame, there was a time when he wooed her with his trademark hard-nosed hustle—but she resisted with her own trademark resoluteness. Here’s the story in her own words; forgive the poor production values and the brief interruption to give a granola bar to a homeless man outside the stadium:

[“So are we allowed to ask you on video about Enos Slaughter, and your interaction with Enos Slaughter?”] Oh, I guess. [laughs] See, I worked at the [St. Louis Post-Dispatch], I worked in the advertising national, and we had salesmen. Well, I was secretary to their boss, the manager of the national advertising. And Slaughter was a real good friend of one of the salesmen, and he came in, oh…..a LOT, and of course he was on his third divorce, and he was conceited. And he always wanted to take me for a drink across at the Jefferson Hotel, you know, after work. So one day I just kind of got tired of it, and I said, “I have six brothers and a dad, and if I would go there with you, and you’re getting all these divorces, somebody would kill ya.” And so I said, that’s it, I couldn’t waste any more time on him. And you know, I couldn’t date anybody from the Post either—my dad told me that; he said “That only gives problems later on,” you know, if you break up. And in those days, you listened! At least, we did. [“So, no regrets about not dating a future Hall of Famer?”] No, no. I….well, my god, I think he ended up with five wives! [“And you weren’t one of them.”] NO!

It’s possible that Slaughter was just trying to improve his performance on the field. After all, as Marty Marion—his teammate and Dolores’s favorite player—once said, “Enos Slaughter has had five wives, and every time he gets married, he has a good year.”

Huge thanks to Julie for the video!

She kept saying she was going to fall asleep in the back seat at any minute, and then she just kept coming up with awesome stories. 🙂
